So what is Android exactly about, and what is the Google Phone? First off, Android is not just an operating system for mobile phones, but a broader software platform, including a mobile operating system, middleware and key applications. Early prototypes were unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, on February 12th, 2008.
Several handset makers have expressed interest in using Google Android on their phones: HTC, Samsung and LG are among them. The first phones wille arrive by the end of 2008.
The T-Mobile G1 (based on the HTC Dream) is the first Android based handset in the US. It was announced on a press conference on September 23rd 2008 in New York. The G1 will officially launch on October 27th 2008 in the US, and will be available at selected T-Mobile Stores and retailers from that date. The device has a simlock for the T-Mobile network.
