HTC Dream becomes T-Mobile G1: A Quick Look Back

By Google Phone Guru | Sep 3, 2008

T-Mobile G1A few weeks ago we had no idea what carrier would offer the HTC Dream. In less than a month’s time that has all changed: we’ve had a first look at the smartphone and a confirmation that the Dream will be called the T-Mobile G1. For the first time, we’re looking at a Google phone that could be released very soon. So let’s look back how it all happened.

About a month back, we first saw the HTC Dream in action. The video was a little blurry, and we didn’t know if it was a fake, but it sent the internet ablaze. After a couple of image leaks, diagrams and more, we now know that the video was real. A week later, the FCC approved the HTC Dream and we saw a diagram of the phone: it had a jogball! Finally we realized that the HTC Dream is the T-Mobile G1. T-Mobile will be the carrier for the first Android-based headset in the US. But when?

One rumor said that the T-Mobile G1 would be available on September 17th, but now it seems you’ll be able to get your hands on one starting October 13th. Last week, we finally got a clear look at the HTC Dream with T-Mobile branding.
