Marcy Simon, girlfriend of Google CEO Eric Schmidt, will be handling the PR of the yet to be launched Googlephone. Simon has no experience in wireless or telecom, while Google’s telecom-savvy director of corporate communications David Krane will just have to sit and watch. According to Valleywag, the decision to hire Marcy Simon says a lot about Schmidt’s character AND about the fate of the phone project.
Chances are slim that Google will actually be making a Googlephone, which makes Simon’s job pretty pointless, although she may not realize that yet. The Googlephone project will probably just be a tool for Google to threaten phonemakers and wireless carriers, and to make sure that they will add the Google search engine and applications to their offerings.
