Android Open Handset Alliance Adds 14 New Members

Open Handset AllianceSony Ericsson, ASUS and Garmin are among the new members that have joined Google’s Open Handset Alliance. Joining founding members T-Mobile, Telefonica, Motorola, Samsung (and others) are ARM, ASUS, AKM Semiconductor, Atheros, Borqs, Ericsson, Garmin, Huawei Technologies, Omron Software, Softbank, Sony Ericsson, Teleca AB, Toshiba, and Vodafone. But there are still a couple of big players missing in the list: Nokia, AT&T, Microsoft, RIM, Verizon and Palm, among others. Sony Ericsson has expressed plans to develop an Android based device, but for most of the new members it remains unclear what they’re up to.

Google Offering Unlocked Android Phone to Developers

Google Dev Phone 1Google is now offering the Android Dev Phone 1, a special device designed for developers. The phone doesn’t have a SIM lock or a hardware lock and ships with a system image that is fully compatible with Android 1.1. Developers can use any SIM in the device and can flash custom Android firmware builds. The phone seems an ideals solution for developers who live outside of the US, and would like to test their software on a real device. To purchase an Android Dev Phone 1, you must first register as an Android developer – that’ll set you back $25. The phone itself costs $399 and is limited to 1 device per developer account.

Second Android Phone ‘Agora’ comes to Australia

Kogan AgoraThe world’s second Google Phone, based on the Android platform, will launch at the end of January. It will be manufactured by Australian based Kogan, and is going to be available in two models: the Agora (around $225) and Agora Pro ($295). Both models are simlock free and are available for preorder on Kogan’s website. The phones will work with any GSM simcard.
